St Helens makes an ideal holiday destination – whatever your interests.
At its heart is that rare, but quintessentially English feature, the village green (reputedly the second-largest in England). The hub of the village, it provides the setting for activities as diverse as carnivals, cricket, football and fairs.
Dotted around the green and close by the cottage are two shops, two restaurants, a cafe (selling top-notch brownies) and the village pub. There are more restaurants and an excellent selection of independent shops in nearby Bembridge.
St Helens, on the edge of Bembridge Harbour, provides an ideal base for sailing holidays and the cottage is within easy walking distance of the yacht clubs at Brading Haven and Bembridge.
The beach at St Helens is just ten minutes' walk away and provides a child-friendly environment for rockpooling and swimming (in the summer there is also a licensed beach cafe to keep the adults happy).
St Helens provides an excellent base for walking holidays all year round: stroll along the old mill wall to the Duver (owned by the National Trust), then follow the coastal path past secluded bays to the pretty yachting village of Seaview. Or cut along the disused railway line to the RSPB reserve at Brading marshes and up onto the downs at Culver. Take your binoculars to enjoy the varied birdlife and beautiful panoramic views. For those wanting to explore by car, motorbike or cycle, the Isle of Wight has much to offer: from wonderful beaches to historic houses like Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle; from theme parks to farms and vineyards selling local produce.
